A visa from India can be obtained by US citizens who want to visit this country, or by those who want to stay longer than the duration allowed on their American passport. The Indian government sets specific requirements that must be met in order to obtain an Indian visa, and they vary depending on your reason for traveling. The main types of visas are business visas, tourist visas, student visas, medical visas, and employment visas (which allow you to work in India for a specific amount of time). When applying for an INDIAN VISA FOR US CITIZENS, several different documents will need to be submitted with your application in order to prove that you are eligible.
What do I need to know about applying for an Indian visa?
There are quite a few things that you should be aware of before applying for your Indian visa. This guide will tell you everything that you need to know in order to apply for an Indian visa with complete confidence and peace of mind. Here’s what we have prepared for you in our complete Indian visa guide: What do I need to know about applying for an URGENT INDIA VISA?
Where can I apply?
US citizens can apply for a visa at an Indian embassy or consulate in their home country, or from within India if they’re visiting. It’s also possible to hire a private immigration agency like JetVisas to handle some of your paperwork for you (fees range from about $250 to $700 depending on whether you apply inside or outside of India). If you are planning on moving to India for any period of time, it might be worth spending that money on expert help. That way, if you do have any problems with your application, all your documents will already be properly arranged and processed.
What documents do I need to apply?
You need two documents in order to apply for a tourist visa: an application form and a passport that is valid for at least six months. You also need to submit proof of where you’ll be staying in India. If you’re staying with friends or family, you can provide them as a sponsor. Otherwise, you’ll have to find a hotel or hostel that agrees to act as your sponsor and provide their address as well as a letter stating they agree to accept responsibility for your presence during your time in India. Your plan of travel should also be included with an explanation of why you are visiting India, whether it is for tourism, medical treatment, or other reasons.
How much does it cost?
US citizens currently pay a $160 visa fee (Rs 6,100 at 64/$1 exchange rate) when applying for a tourist, business, or medical visit visa online. They may also choose to apply offline by getting an e-Visa stamped in their passport upon arrival. This can be done at select Indian airports and costs $70 (Rs 3,900). In addition to these fees, US visitors must pay for health insurance during their stay in India. Insurance policies purchased before arriving cost about $10/day ($60/week) while policies purchased from Indian insurers can range from $3–$8/day ($15–$40/week). Most plans cover up to $25,000 in expenses and are valid for three months with no deductible on most plans.
How long will my application take?
This can be tough to say, and it can depend on a variety of factors. Some countries’ consulate websites list processing times, but others will not have that information listed in advance. There’s no guarantee, but if you contact your local embassy and let them know about your upcoming trip you may be able to get a general idea of how long your application will take. This isn’t always accurate (embassies are frequently backlogged), but it is generally helpful as it gives you a place to start with your timeline planning. On average, however, applications typically take anywhere from three months to six months to complete from initial filing to execution. Of course these numbers don’t include transit time; it may be an additional few weeks before you actually receive your visa once your application has been approved.
What if my visa application is rejected?
If your visa application is rejected, you may submit a new one. However, there is no guarantee that your second application will be approved. Additionally, it can take up to 3 months for your visa status to change after applying for a different type of visa. If you are in India on a tourist visa and decide that you want to remain in India permanently (known as switching to an employment visa), you will have to leave and re-enter India with your new visa. There are restrictions on how many times you can re-enter India on a tourist visa before having it revoked.
What else should I know about obtaining an Indian visa?
If you are a US citizen, don’t forget to submit your visa application at least 2 months before your planned trip. It is recommended that you do not wait until 3-4 weeks prior to travel as processing can take up to 4 weeks. You can still apply for visas after these dates, but it becomes more likely that your visa will be denied. In addition, if you have a passport with less than six months of validity left on it, then you must renew your passport first before applying for an Indian visa. You can obtain an e-visa online; however, there are additional fees associated with it and in some cases, tourists may be asked by airline officials for proof of having obtained an e-visit before boarding a flight for India.
